Luxury Wellness Retreats for Every Type of Reset
Wellness travel is no longer one type of trip. For one traveler, a reset means early-morning hikes, strength training, and a structured program. For another, it means a quiet spa, long lunches, and an afternoon with absolutely nowhere to be.
There are retreats built around longevity and preventative health, properties that draw on local healing traditions, and resorts where wellness is woven into a broader vacation rather than becoming the entire itinerary. That is why I rarely think there is one "best" wellness resort. The better question is what you want to feel different when you come home.
Whether you are planning a solo reset, a couples trip, a friends' getaway, or a group retreat, these are some of the luxury wellness properties I would consider, and the type of traveler each one suits best.
Need to Know
Start with the level of structure you want. A destination spa with a long activity calendar is very different from an intensive retreat where hiking, meals, fitness, and treatments are scheduled for you. Some travelers love having every day mapped out. Others want options without feeling like they signed up for wellness camp.
Decide whether this is a wellness trip or a vacation with great wellness. Both can be excellent. A true destination wellness property tends to combine several elements such as movement, nutrition, mindfulness, outdoor experiences, education, and personalized programming. A luxury resort with an exceptional spa can deliver a more flexible version of the same reset.
Ideal length of stay: Three or four nights works well for a lighter reset, especially when the property is easy to reach. More structured or medically focused programs often make more sense when you can give them five to seven nights.
For groups: Look for enough programming that people can spend part of the day together and part of the day doing their own thing. The strongest group wellness trips do not require everyone to want the same treatment, class, or level of activity.
Book ahead: Spa appointments, private sessions, specialty experiences, and larger room categories can disappear well before the hotel itself sells out. For a group, I would plan several months ahead so the trip is not built around whatever appointment times happen to be left.
Stateside Wellness Retreats That Make It Easy to Reset
You do not have to cross an ocean to find serious wellness programming. Several of the strongest destination wellness properties in the country are within easy reach of major airports, which can make a short retreat feel far more restorative when you are not losing a day on each end to travel.
The Lodge at Woodloch | Hawley, Pennsylvania
The Lodge at Woodloch is one of my favorite choices when everyone in the group has a slightly different idea of wellness. Its daily schedule spans fitness, mind-body classes, creative arts, culinary programming, guest speakers, and outdoor activities, so no one has to spend the trip following the exact same plan.
The all-inclusive format also removes a lot of the friction from a group stay. Meals and a broad range of scheduled activities are part of the experience, while spa treatments and private sessions can be layered in based on each guest's priorities.
Choose it when: you want variety, structure when you want it, and enough options for a group to split up and reconnect throughout the day.
Fora Perks:
- $100 hotel / resort credit
- Welcome amenity
- Breakfast daily
- Room upgrade when available
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
Miraval Berkshires Resort & Spa | Lenox, Massachusetts
Miraval works especially well for travelers who want to explore wellness rather than follow one rigid program. A stay can move from yoga and meditation to culinary experiences, creative workshops, outdoor adventure, equine programming, spa treatments, and sessions focused on personal well-being.
That range is what makes Miraval appealing for couples and groups. One person can spend the afternoon at the spa while someone else chooses a more active experience, then everyone can come back together for dinner.
Choose it when: you want a broad wellness menu and the freedom to build a very personal itinerary.
Fora Perks:
- $100 resort / hotel credit
- Breakfast daily
- Room upgrade when available
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
Canyon Ranch Lenox | Lenox, Massachusetts
Canyon Ranch is a strong fit for travelers who want a comprehensive approach to well-being. Fitness, nutrition, spa, outdoor activity, and access to wellness professionals can all be part of the stay, which makes it particularly appealing when the trip is about more than relaxation.
You can build the experience around a specific objective or keep things flexible and choose from the daily programming. It is the kind of place where two people can arrive with completely different priorities and still feel as though the resort was designed for both of them.
Choose it when: you want expert-led wellness with plenty of room to personalize the experience.
Fora Perks:
- $100 hotel / resort credit
- Breakfast daily
- Room upgrade when available
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
The Ranch Malibu | Malibu, California
The Ranch is for the traveler who wants structure. Its signature approach centers on hiking, fitness, yoga or meditation, massage, and plant-forward meals, with the schedule doing much of the decision-making for you.
This is not the retreat I would choose for someone whose ideal wellness trip involves sleeping until 10 and deciding what to do over breakfast. The appeal is accountability, consistency, and the feeling that you came specifically to reset your routine.
Choose it when: you want a challenging, highly organized program and do not want to spend the week making decisions.
Fora Perks:
- Complimentary 50-minute massage for two
- Breakfast daily
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
Shou Sugi Ban House | Water Mill, New York
Shou Sugi Ban House offers a quieter kind of reset. The Japanese-inspired property combines spa treatments, hydrotherapy, movement, meditation, nutrition, and a culinary program within an intimate Hamptons setting.
It is particularly appealing when the objective is to slow down rather than fill every hour. The property feels private and intentional, which also makes it a natural fit for a long weekend from the Northeast.
Choose it when: you want stillness, beautiful design, and wellness that feels restorative rather than demanding.
Wellness Without Giving Up the Resort Experience
Not every wellness trip needs to take place at a dedicated retreat. Sometimes the right answer is a luxury resort where the spa and wellness programming are strong enough to anchor the trip, but everyone can still enjoy the pool, restaurants, outdoor activities, and their own free time.
Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa | Paradise Valley, Arizona
For a warm-weather reset, Sanctuary gives you a dramatic desert setting with wellness that can fit naturally into the day. Think movement classes, meditation, spa time, and a property that makes it very easy to alternate between doing something good for yourself and doing very little at all.
This is one I like for a friends' trip or leadership retreat because wellness does not have to take over the entire itinerary. A group can begin the day together, separate for treatments or downtime, then meet again for dinner.
Choose it when: you want desert wellness with the flexibility of a full-service luxury resort.
Terranea Resort | Rancho Palos Verdes, California
Terranea's Southern California coastline gives a group two very different directions to take the trip. You can lean into rest with spa treatments, yoga, and Pilates, or make the days more active with hiking and coastal experiences.
That flexibility is the selling point. Not everyone needs to be equally committed to the wellness portion of the trip for the destination to work.
Choose it when: you want wellness, ocean views, and enough activity to keep a mixed-interest group happy.
Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa | Manalapan, Florida
Eau is a good example of a resort where spa time can become the centerpiece of a traditional beach vacation. The oceanfront setting keeps the trip relaxed, while the spa and wellness offerings give you a reason to build in a little more intention than the usual pool-and-lunch itinerary.
For a group, this works beautifully when not everyone wants a formal retreat. Some guests can prioritize spa rituals and movement while others treat the stay as a polished Palm Beach escape.
Choose it when: you want a beach trip with a meaningful wellness component, not a rigid schedule.
Montage Deer Valley | Park City, Utah
Montage Deer Valley works in more than one season. Winter brings ski-in, ski-out days and a natural rhythm of mountain activity followed by spa time. Summer opens the destination to hiking, outdoor movement, and a completely different version of Park City.
That makes it useful for groups where wellness needs to coexist with a broader mountain vacation. There is plenty to do together, but no pressure for every guest to spend the day in a fitness class or treatment room.
Choose it when: you want mountain scenery, active days, and a wellness reset that still feels like a vacation.
When the Retreat Is the Destination
For some trips, wellness is not one part of the itinerary. It is the reason you are getting on the plane. These properties make the most sense when you are ready to travel specifically for their approach, setting, or expertise.
SHA Wellness Clinic | Spain
SHA is a very different proposition from a traditional spa resort. The experience is designed around health and wellness programs that can incorporate medical expertise, nutrition, movement, and advanced therapies alongside the comforts of a luxury stay.
This is the type of property I would consider for someone genuinely interested in longevity, preventative health, or a more clinically informed program. You can still enjoy the Mediterranean setting, but the trip has a clear purpose.
Choose it when: health optimization is the priority and you want more than a massage-and-yoga version of wellness.
Fora Perks:
- $100 wellness credit
- Room upgrade when available
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
Chablé Yucatán | Yucatán, Mexico
Chablé stands out because its wellness philosophy is closely connected to place. Mayan traditions, local healers, the surrounding jungle, and the property's cenote setting give the experience an identity that could not be recreated at a generic spa resort.
There is still plenty of conventional luxury, but the most memorable part of the stay is the way local traditions and wellness are woven together.
Choose it when: cultural immersion and a strong sense of place matter as much as the spa itself.
Fora Perks:
- $100 resort / hotel credit
- Breakfast daily
- Room upgrade when available
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
Schloss Elmau | Bavarian Alps, Germany
Schloss Elmau is one of the more interesting choices for families because it combines serious wellness facilities with programming that gives children and teens plenty to do. Adults can spend time in the spa, take a movement class, or enjoy the mountains while younger travelers have their own activities.
The resort's multiple spa environments also make it possible to balance family time with adults-only time, which is not easy to find at a property with this level of wellness programming.
Choose it when: you want a European wellness trip that works for more than one generation.
Fora Perks:
- $100 resort / hotel credit
- Breakfast daily
- Room upgrade when available
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
Heckfield Place | Hampshire, England
Heckfield Place is the choice for travelers who want wellness to feel woven into an elegant countryside stay rather than programmed from morning to night. Set on a sprawling English estate, the property pairs its natural setting with spa treatments, movement, yoga, Pilates, and resident practitioners.
This is one I would choose for someone who wants to slow down, spend time outdoors, and enjoy the atmosphere of a beautiful country house without giving up a serious wellness component.
Choose it when: you want quiet luxury, nature, and a restorative countryside escape rather than an intensive retreat.
Fora Perks:
- $100 food / beverage credit
- Breakfast daily
- Room upgrade when available
- Extended check-in and check-out whenever possible
The Ranch Italy | Fiuggi, Italy
The Ranch Italy takes the structured approach of The Ranch and places it in an entirely different setting. The program is built around movement, hiking, yoga, massage, nourishing meals, and a schedule that leaves very little ambiguity about what the day looks like.
This is not the trip for someone planning to use the retreat as a base for leisurely sightseeing around Italy. The program is the itinerary.
Choose it when: you want a transformation-focused trip and appreciate having the schedule decided for you.
Clinique La Prairie | Montreux, Switzerland
Clinique La Prairie sits at the more medical and longevity-focused end of the wellness spectrum. Its programs bring together diagnostics, nutrition, movement, medical expertise, and well-being within a luxury environment on Lake Geneva.
I would look here for a traveler who is not merely interested in feeling relaxed for a week, but is curious about longevity and a highly personalized approach to health.
Choose it when: science, preventative health, and longevity are central to why you are traveling.
Planning a Group Wellness Retreat
A group wellness trip works best when the itinerary leaves room for both connection and independence. I would rarely schedule the entire group from breakfast through dinner.
A better rhythm might be a shared morning class, breakfast together, individual spa treatments or activities during the afternoon, then a group dinner or private experience in the evening. It gives the trip a purpose without making anyone feel as though they are attending a conference in yoga pants.
For larger groups, I also look at meeting or gathering spaces, private class options, group dining, transfer logistics, room inventory, and whether the property can build a custom wellness experience around the group. Those operational details matter just as much as the spa menu.
About the Perks
I have listed the Fora perks provided for each participating property directly below its recommendation so you can see the added value at a glance. Benefits are tied to the eligible booking program and are subject to availability where noted.
How to Choose the Right Wellness Retreat
- For maximum choice: Look at Miraval Berkshires or The Lodge at Woodloch.
- For a structured fitness reset: Consider The Ranch Malibu or The Ranch Italy.
- For a medical or longevity focus: Look at SHA Wellness Clinic or Clinique La Prairie.
- For culture and place: Chablé Yucatán brings local tradition into the wellness experience.
- For families: Schloss Elmau makes wellness much easier to combine with a multigenerational trip.
- For a flexible group getaway: Sanctuary Camelback, Terranea, Eau Palm Beach, or Montage Deer Valley let wellness sit alongside a broader resort vacation.
Ready for a Reset?
The right wellness trip is not necessarily the resort with the biggest spa or the longest treatment menu. It is the one that matches how you actually want to spend your days, how much structure you want, and what you want to take home from the experience.
I plan luxury wellness trips for solo travelers, couples, friends, and groups, including accommodations, preferred hotel benefits when available, transfers, and the details that turn a resort stay into a complete itinerary.
